The Nature Of God

Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation. Exodus 34:7

This verse is found at the center of one of the greatest revelations of the character of God in the Bible. As Moses is seeking God’s face and Israel is being reformed as a nation. They are discovering who God is. The mercy, grace, and forgiveness of God stand out as the core of God’s nature.

But God’s love does not diminish His justice and holiness. Notice it also says, “by no means clearing the guilty”. God does not use one of His attributes at the expense of the others. They all work in harmony with one another. In order for us to receive God’s forgiveness we have to ask for it. Our hearts must be turned toward God. Then He can act in love and give us what we don’t deserve.

God is like a loving Father who desires to bless His children every chance He gets. He is not reluctant. He is generous. As we believe in Him and love Him, He pours out His goodness in eternal supply! Remember that even in the Old Testament God wanted to be known for His mercy, forgiveness, and grace.

Today’s prayer: “Lord thank You for Your mercy and forgiveness in my life. May my heart become more like Your heart today.”

Keep looking up,
Pastor Gary
