The Mercy Seat

And the cherubim shall stretch out their wings above, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and they shall face one another; the faces of the cherubim shall be toward the mercy seat. Exodus 25:20

God directed Moses to build the Tabernacle. It would be a portable place of worship and sacrifice for the priests of Israel as the nation journeyed through the wilderness. In the Holiest place of the tabernacle was the Ark of the Covenant which contained the ten commandments tablets, Aaron’s staff that miraculously budded, and a pot of manna from heaven.

The 10 commandments represented the law of God. Sometimes people see a difference between the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New. But consider this: The cherubim that hovered over the Ark represented God’s vantage point. This spot is called the mercy seat. So God literally looked at the law through His mercy. Even in keeping God’s covenant He remembered His mercy towards us who He knew we would fail to keep it. What a loving Father. What a gracious God.

Mercy is when God does not give us what we deserve. Grace is when God gives us what we don’t deserve. Forever and always, God is good. He provides mercy for us in the place where we meet with Him. Between us and God’s law is mercy!

Today’s prayer: “Lord thank You for Your mercy that loves me even when I fail to keep Your law. May Your loving kindness lead me to greater holiness.”

Keep looking up,
Pastor Gary
