The Deadliness
of Sin

"The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord".
Romans 6:23

Sin is deadly. Whenever we sin we bring death upon our lives in one form or another. To sin means to "miss the mark". The mark we are aiming at is the character of God. To even do, think, or say something that is not in keeping with God word is to miss the mark. Needless to say we all sin each and every day. Some sins may be more culturally acceptable than others, but they all take us away from God who is life, resulting in death.

We can see this exemplified in the sin of Adam and Eve. They were given a million "yes" trees and one "no" tree. That tree represented the freedom of choice. Without a choice we cannot have a genuine relationship with God, and that is why we were created. God said "in the day you eat of it (the "no" tree) you will surely die". They disobeyed and ate. Did they die? Not physically, although that would now come too. But they died a spiritual death. They were separated from God, and actually began to hide from God. Something inside them died that day.

Sin always, always brings death. It may be financial, relational, spiritual, or emotional. But the law is universal. Even if no one knows about our sin, there is death. We know. God knows. Because of this truth we should think twice when tempted. Faith and obedience bring life. Doubt and disobedience bring death. May we not be deceived by the lure of sin. Instead may we hunger for the life that comes from walking by faith in God's Word, and love for God's heart.

Thank God that even though we are sinners, He has given us the gracious gift of His Son to make up for our disobedience. The good news of the gospel is that God loves us even when we miss the mark. This gift should not give us a license to sin, but a grateful heart to trust more. May your life be a reflection of the gift of God's grace!

Today's prayer thought: "Lord help me to make decisions that lead me closer to life and not death. To unwrap the gift of grace and share it with the people around me."

Keep looking up,
Pastor Gary
