In God's Image

Gen. 1:27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

You are not only of divine origin, but of divine likeness. It was God’s intention that you and I would be like Him. Of course, we can never be Him, we will never be the source of all life as God is. In fact, it was the lie that we can be God, that deceived Eve and Adam into biting into the forbidden fruit. No, we can never be God, but we must seek to be godly. We should be God-like. We must be, it is our purpose and our destiny. Romans 8:29 says "whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren". It is God’s plan that you take on His characteristics just as a child takes on the similarities of their earthly parents. God is your heavenly Father.

So what can this understanding do for us? A couple key things:

1. It gives us purpose and direction in life

We know that the main reason we exist is to grow in the image of our Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ. Everything else takes second place to this. Many people are lost and without any real sense of purpose in life. But knowing we are created to be in God’s image helps us to know what the meaning of life truly is.

2. It gives us great self esteem

When you know and believe that you are the offspring of God Himself, it will instantly give you value. You are valuable because God made you. Even thought we are in a fallen condition because of our sins, we are still God’s people and have great value. You are not just what you do or don’t do for a living that gives you identity. You are not just who you are related to that gives you identity. You are a child of God. That in itself is enough to give you all the value and purpose in the world.

So today may we meditate on the truth that we are made in God’s image, believe and receive who you really are in Him. Seek to become the godly person He created you to be. Do not shy away from it or doubt it. But embrace it, claim it, shout it if you need to:

"I AM MADE TO BE LIKE GOD"!!!! He is my source and my Heavenly Father!
